Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was young the carnival barker father died, leaving Ruth's mother with no choice but to be a cleaning lady and waitress in order to provide for the family. Ruth was born in the poorest neighborhood in Boston Massachusetts where she enrolled in school. She quit the school she was attending within two years of her education in order to pursue the profession of acting. The route she took was not without obstacles. While in New York, her first task was to pose stills for crime magazines, her dream of performing in the theater she longed for was not available. Following a short time as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back home to the United States and quit her job. As an usherette, she worked during the early morning hours and also performed at the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first permanent acting gig. She has also been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
